Now create your own Custom Indicators !

We’ve recently added the ability to create your own custom/derived indicators using existing indicators.

For example, you may have your logic of HLC3 as is “high  + low + close / 3” & would want to use this across multiple filters in different/same scans/widgets. Until now, you’d need to copy/write the logic whereever it would required.

With “custom indicators”, you can simply define its logic as:

HLC = ( current candle high + current candle low + current candle close ) / 3

Here’s the custom indicator for the above logic: https://chartink.com/indicator/hlc3

The above created indicator can then be used to create new scans/widgets: https://chartink.com/screener/close-above-hlc3 (notice the HLC indicator selection)

These are similar to having a value saved in a variable/temp working space and then using it across in multiple scans. Note, while using it across scans, you can select the timeframe for its calcuation, eg: Daily/Weekly/Monthly or Intraday candles giving you further flexibility.

To access a previous candle for a given timeframe, you can select “1/2.. candles ago”.

        Between 920am and 9.19:59 there is difference of one 1 second. Please clarify which is correct, 5 minutes or 1 second LAG?

            This can be done with the help of a custom indicator/formula. Here is an example scan for your reference where the current day’s HLC/3 is greater than the SMA of the 20-period. The source for the SMA is HLC/3.

            ​​​​​​​To use this custom indicator, you can “Copy scan” scan & make changes. You can view the logic of the custom indicator by clicking on the purple sign(>>) next to the indicator.

            we are unable to use indices in calculation with respect to other symbols, eg, nifty50/reliance, to find it’s RS and then filter, if such things are given then it will be more flexible to use.

      4. other way of putting it is, the data seems updated every 5 minutes. at 9:00, 9:05, 9:10, 9.15, 9:20, etc.,
        And Premium updated every 1 minute.

          You’ll get pre-market data for the current day’s data starting at 9:09 am, consisting of data until 9:08:59am. Data is updated at 9:09 am in our scans for our Daily/Weekly/Monthly/Quarterly & Yearly candles. Note that for Intraday candles(1/2/3…minutes), data would reflect starting 9:15 am.

          Alerts are not sent out before 9.15 am. You will need to manually run the scan and view the results with candles, including pre-market values.

        As per your reply, there is a time lag of 1 minute. The data relating to 9.20 am will get updated only after 1 minute on 9.21 am. Is it correct? Then how do you call your data to premium members as real-time data.

          The reason we’ve set it as 1 minute is to avoid the noise from constant movements & crossing check the results on a scan/widget. Having them updated every second would change/update the filters/indicators by the time you cross-verify it across other tools & create confusion, that’s the reason the lowest possible frequency is 1 minute, this ensures you can validate the results on the chart in realtime.

          It is not possible to copy-paste these scans directly due to the use of custom indicators.

          However, you can create the custom indicators used within this scan for your own scans; below are the steps that you need to follow:

          Click on the blue arrow mark (>>) on a scan that has a custom indicator.

          You will now see the formula. Create a new indicator using that custom formula (https://chartink.com/indicator).

          After saving that customized formula, open a new scan with the same condition and type the indicator name.

      11. There is a lag of 2-3 minutes, even in premium subscription. This is not of any use, since each second is crucial for day traders. You should take customers feedback in a healthy way, to make your portal more useful.

          1. With horizontal and vertical icons we can draw vertical and horizontal lines. By clicking the oblique icon it it is possible to drag and draw the trend line on PC/Laptop. Please explain how to draw the trend line on a an android or apple device

    But will like to add one comment ” can you give the OPEN INTEREST (OI) from NSE option chain i.e if your chartink will provide us first two highest OI on CALL and first two highest OI on PUT side then we can able to get the particular stocks which are trading near support or resistance and it will really helpful for us.

        1. Currently we support only NSE cash stocks. We have only created a segment group called ‘futures’ to scan stocks that are traded in the F&O group. If you select futures, scanning will be done on basis of cash stock prices/ values.

    Although you are doing excellent work but one will not know whether his code works best or how best it works i.e. the back testing does not give the output based on entry and exit points determined through codes. You can refer to Streak by Zerodha where they give not only code writing but also backtesting. For first 7 days its free for Zerodha account holders and then they charge Rs. 350 per month for backtesting of your codes. In brief unless you bring out proper backtesting tool, all these coding will not work and people may not even subscribe to real time alerts.

    Also my ADX screeners and the results when I get are far different. I had to delete stuff that i had created.

    The formula is :
    Current PVT = ((Current Candle) % Change * (Current Candle) Volume) + (Previous Candle) PVT

    1) I´ve an query regarding checking a stock performance against a sector, which it belongs.
    I saw in something similar in Dashboard to compare sector wise performance =>
    groupcount ( {cash} 1 where [0] 15 minute close > 1 day ago close ) / groupcount ( {cash} 1 ) * 100 as ‘Advances percentage’
    2) Also it would be nice if we can measure the relative strength of stocks against its sectors(stock price /sector average) , then sectors against indices (sector average / indices value)

    Custom Indicator is useful but doesn’t support comparison operator and Crossover.
    Because of this it is not possible to write advance custom indicator.
    can you please confirm when this will be implemented or please suggest if there workaround for same?

      Note on automating trades with webhooks, requires some programming logic so that you can incoporate our webhooks within your application which is alreadying using API’s from the stockbrokers to place orders. Your system/application must be deployed on the internet and reachable by a domain or a IP address, this requires your application to support the ability to receive incoming POST request’s so that we can send our JSON data for the alert

      Hope this helps on back-testing:

      It will show the previous days/ minutes results for your scan without the need for you to modify the scan. Back-testing will not give alerts. It is only to analyze/ view stocks previously triggered by your scans.  If you click on any of the bars on the graph, it will show the list of stocks that triggered as per the scan previously. 

      Back-test data will show data for the lowest candle time frame in your scan. If lowest time frame is 1 minute, it will show results for last 1 minutes. If its on daily candle it will show data for past 6 months. We show results for the past 150 bars  in our backtest section, these 150 candles could be of any timeframe, depending on the lowest timeframe in your scan, so for 5 minutes for example, you would get 2 days, for 1 minute, half a day and so on. 
       
      If you have the alert frequency of 5 minutes on a 1 hour candle scan, the alert results will update every 5 minutes and so will the backtest results(if you open the site and view the graph every 5 minutes), the difference is that the alert keeps a history of all your stocks triggered every 5 minutes i.e at 9:20am, 9:25am and so on via the alert history page,, whereas the backtest graph doesn’t keep any history as such, it will show the results only as of the candle completion time i.e 10:15am. so its not necessary that the backtest will show all the stocks that were triggered every 5 minutes as your alert show’s.

      Alerts is a premium feature that would allow you to do this, it keeps a track of all your stocks that met the condition every 5 minutes so that you don’t need to keep a track of them manually in the scanner page or the backtesting graph. The backtest is a dynamic graph that would update/change as your 1 hour candle is changing.

    .
    For example say I have to meet 2 conditions to enter say A and B.
    .
    Once A condition is fulfiled I have to pass the 5 min Close value to the ” THE CUSTOM VAriable” .
    Then in next say 50mins i.e ten “5-min ” Candles if it cross a Predefined line I will enter, otherwise not.
    .

    I’m a paid member, every month I’m subscribing it since the visualization is very simple and clear. However I find there are lot of drawbacks in this websites.

    1) I noticed Charts are not getting updated every 1 min until unless we update it manually like a offline charts. It should have near real time charts like sec by sec. Very very bad. Biggest drawback I feel.

    2) Just having basic indicators, all these indicators we can get in any free chart software. No additional indicators even for paid members. I’m using this more than 10 years, nothing changed (except dashboards) since long back, same indicators, no advanced indicators are added. Another biggest drawback.

    3) Indicators can’t be customizable as per user interest. For example I want to change parameters for RSI like overbought and oversold, changing color etc, there is no such option.

    4) Dashboards should be more visualize and can be useful to new joiners in the market. All can’t write their own code. Pre-defined dashboards can’t be understand by all. Needed more pre-defined and high visualize and frequently updating dashboards for screeners like RSI > 70, EMA cross over, MACD crossover etc which can be very simple and can be understandable to all new joiners. Should have dashboards for Open interest as well.

    If these are modifications can be implemented, this website will be on top.

    I am totally impressed with the chartink tool.
    I have one query regarding the parameters used for filtering the date.

    We normally create filter like this:
    Latest Sma(volume,20) Greater than Number {500000}

    So in this query, what is Latest going to do and what interval it take to check the simple moving average study. For e.g. we specify 1/2/3/5 min etc. What is interval for Latest field.

    Also do you have some user guide type of document that covers all the possible attribute for chartink.

  84. Even though i copy a existing filter from a scanner and try to paste that to create a new custom indicator, it is not allowing. It says Clipboard is empty. I am trying to copy a filter and the new custom indicator can paste only copied columns. What is the column and where do i find existing columns such as camarilla H3, L3, H4, L4, CPR, Narrow CPR, Ascending CPR, Descending CPR etc? Please guide me to create it?

    If i use this string

    which do not work as I want to calculate value difference of upper wick and compare that with lower wick of previous day candle.

    and or – if else style operations in easy way. same cross above and cross below not work as accurately.
    2nd. You guys have all those buy orders pending orders, cancelled orders and quantities thing but not have OI and IV – which could have done much better for everyone. OI analysis became became big since from 2020 onwards.

      Note: From the way you are describing the above conditions are seen in the stock on 12/01/2024. The INFY did not break the day’s high on the 73rd candle. But it mainted the day’s high in the 74th and 75th candle. If you disable the first condition, you will see the stock in the backtest of the above scan on 12/01/2024. For the volume spike we have considered the current candle volume is greater than the average volume of the last 20 candles.

      1) We don’t compute the VWAP values at our end & get this directly from the exchange & even if we did so at our end, there would be slight differences due to the ticks mismatch across various vendors.

      2) The reason is vendors consider only a few ticks per second & these tickets could be different across various platforms. We, on the other hand, get the candle computed on the exchange & it includes the ATP/VWAP values as received & computed in the exchange, which is more accurate.

      3) Please let us know the formula for VWAP. We can surely try to create the same.

    Is it possible to create RS conditions in Chartink without having to put values manually. Like a comparison for 252 days or 123 days RS comparison and then use that condition as a filter.

    60 SMA must be greater than 200 SMA
    60 SMA must be greater than 200 EMA
    60 EMA must be greater than 200 SMA
    60 EMA must be greater than 200 EMA
    then when price touch to any of the 60 SMA/EMA or 200 SMA/EMA
    i should get informed
    like every 1 minute it will check whether LTP is touch to any of this SMA/EMA or not

      Apologies, but we do not have the feature for checking for the “all-time high”. We can create a scan for the current close crossing the maximum high of the last 3 years which was not created in this year. Would that work for you?

    why we cannot use greater than option while making a custom indicator? It’s disabled and only +,-,*,/ is allowed.
